The number of people who are now employed as software engineers has doubled over the past decade, but the demand for people who do not have a computer science degree is on the rise, according to a study.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said in its latest annual report on the state of the US workforce that software engineering jobs are on track to be the fastest-growing field in the US by 2020.
“The rise of the ‘computer-aided design (CAD)’ workforce is accelerating and, despite the slow pace of change, the demand is growing at a rate that is exceeding supply,” said Andrew Roffman, a researcher at the Center for Software Engineering Education and Research at MIT.
The rise in demand for software engineers is largely due to a lack of computer science education and the skills required to effectively work in the field.
According to the BLS, only 38.3% of the workforce has completed a computer-aide engineering degree in the United States in 2020, compared to 73.1% in 2011.
According the report, the number of software engineers with bachelor’s degrees has doubled from 1.3 million in 2010 to 3.3 m in 2020.
The number with master’s degrees is also on track for a doubling, from 547,000 to 788,000.
But even though software engineering is the fastest growing field in America, there is a growing divide between those who are highly trained and those who have a high-school diploma.
“As the skills that a skilled software engineer has become are becoming more and more relevant, so is the demand,” said Roffma, who has studied the issue for more than a decade.
The BLS said the demand in the software industry is outpacing supply because the skills needed to create software are not in demand.
“While there is an increasing demand for the skills and knowledge that software engineers have developed over the years, there are also growing shortages of those skills and skills,” the BPS wrote.
The lack of coding education and computer science knowledge is driving the rise in software engineers’ pay, with the median hourly wage for software engineer in 2020 was $23.93, up 3.4% from $23 per hour in 2011, according the BPAE.
However, those with college degrees or higher are being paid significantly more.
The median salary for software developers with at least a bachelor’s degree was $78,800 in 2020 and $88,300 for those with a master’s degree, according BPS.
The study said that a growing number of those with master degrees are making less than $100,000 per year, with some earning $60,000 or less.
“Many of the young engineers with advanced degrees in software engineering are starting out at a level that is not high enough to sustain them,” Roffm said.
The BPAe said that, because the jobs market is changing so quickly, the BIS is looking for ways to provide jobs to those with the right background, including technical support.
“If we do not act, the workforce of software engineering will be increasingly vulnerable to automation, automation will disrupt our entire economy, and the future of this industry will be in question,” the report said.
“To maintain the ability of the BFS to monitor and evaluate our progress, we need to provide our employees with the necessary training and knowledge to become the skilled workforce of the future.”
