With a career in the bioengineering field, a bioengineering graduate student might not have many opportunities.
But if you’re one of those lucky students who get a chance to work at a major bioengineering research university, you might be in luck.
A recent study from the National Science Foundation suggests that in the next few years, the demand for bioengineering graduates will increase exponentially.
In a recent study, the authors found that by 2040, bioengineering will be the top-paying field in the US, and the percentage of graduates with a PhD degree will grow from about 20 percent to more than 30 percent.
In the next ten years, BioEngineering, which includes engineering education, research and teaching, will have a PhD program and graduate a record number of bioengineers.
Bioengineering graduates are the most diverse and talented of all engineering disciplines, says Elizabeth K. Mazzola, who heads the National Center for Bioengineering Research and Engineering Education at the National Institutes of Health.
“We’re seeing this across the US,” she says.
“The opportunity for those of us who want to be an engineer to work on a cutting-edge research project is really, really high.”
As for the rest of us, it’s probably better to get your PhD than a PhD. Mizzola says that even if you don’t get a PhD, you can still go to graduate school.
“It’s the next big step for you, but it’s also the next step for the nation.”
She points to the growth of the medical school as an example.
“What I find really interesting is how rapidly medical schools are changing, even as they’re still very much in their infancy.
So they have the infrastructure in place to prepare them to do that.”
In fact, the medical schools at the top of the rankings are also growing, with the Medical School of Florida (MSF) and the College of Engineering at the University of South Florida (USF) each increasing their enrollment numbers.
In 2019, the MSF added about 600 students.
“Our hope is that with these increases, more students will be able to earn a PhD,” says MSF President Robert R. DeSantis.
“And we think that this is an opportunity to give them the education they need to do well in this career.”
Meanwhile, the USF’s overall enrolment is still about 20,000 students.
However, the school has been expanding its research activities to focus more on the medical and scientific areas.
The university has already opened a new lab on campus, and is developing a new program in which it will combine clinical and medical research.
It is also expanding its education programs.
In addition, the university is partnering with a biotechnology company called TumorScience to create a new biosafety certificate.
The certificate is designed to provide a professional certification for students who want more training in bioengineering.
The goal is to give bioengineer graduates a pathway to becoming medical scientists, while also creating a path for future bioengineering students to enter the medical fields.
“One of the things that we think is really important is that they can continue to contribute to the advancement of medicine and science,” DeSantsis says.
The USF is a member of the Bioengineering Education Consortium, a coalition of schools and universities that has been working to create an industry-wide bioengineering certification.
The Bioengineering Certification Program was created in 2014.
It offers certification in Bioengineering from the universities of the US and abroad.
The certification process is not a standardized exam but a self-guided certification that requires students to complete a research paper on a topic of their choice, write a research proposal, and complete an oral exam.
The next step, in 2020, is for the BioEngineer Institute to create its own certificate, with certification to be recognized by the US Department of Agriculture.
“This is the next frontier of bioengineering, and I think this is where we’re going to see it grow the most,” says Elizabeth Mazzolan, the program director.
“Because it’s going to be a career that’s going beyond just being an engineering graduate student.”
The BioEngineers Association of America, the trade group for bioengineered professionals, says that bioengineering has become the next major field in medicine, with a large amount of interest in the fields of biochemistry and physiology.
The group also sees an increase in interest in biotechnology.
“Bioengineering has a great future,” says James R. Burt, president of the bioengineery association.
“I believe that the growth in bioengineation is very good.
And the next generation of bio engineers are going to want to take advantage of that.”
BioEngineered careers are also gaining in popularity.
In recent years, bioengineing programs have expanded, and more than 2,500 PhD students have taken their first job.
