The new engine, named the Advanced Fuel Cell, is a significant step toward the goal of replacing fossil fuels in the power sector.
The b20 is an eight-cylinder, 100-horsepower, high-pressure natural gas engine that will power an 8,500-pound (3,300-kilogram) electric motor, which is capable of producing 10,000 horsepower.
This will be the first time Boeing has introduced an engine designed to operate in wind, water, and high pressure environments.
“Boeing has worked hard to develop a b20 that is both simple and flexible enough for the challenges of our day,” said Boeing President and CEO Dennis Muilenburg in a statement.
“Our first step in the development of this engine was to use the latest in aerospace engineering to design and build an engine that can be scaled to meet future needs.”
The engine, which has already undergone rigorous testing, is expected to go into production in 2018.
The company expects to begin producing b20 engines in 2020.
The new engines, which are a part of Boeing’s b20 portfolio, are expected to be cheaper than those from General Electric and will be much more efficient.
The B20 will be designed for use in the U.S. and Canada.
The technology, developed by Boeing, is also a key element in the company, as it will provide energy to power its CST-100 Starliner and its new Air Force One aircraft.
Boeing has said that the b 20 is the first new product from the company since it began building the 737 MAX, which was unveiled in 2021.
The MAX, in comparison, is an expensive, large-engine jet that has not seen the market since the mid-1990s.
Boeing is also aiming to become a major player in electric vehicle technology, and has invested billions of dollars in building electric vehicles like the XC100 and the Air Force ONE.
